SOS Chatnath >> About >> Life After

The life paths of all 128 children who have grown up and settled out of the village vary widely. Some have pursued employment directly while others have pursued higher education. Many have married and started families of their own. All 10 retired mothers who devoted many years to the village now live in sons’ households!  For each child and mother who has been a part of the SOS Village, Chatnath Homes continues to provide an essential source of support.

  Weddings:

To ensure that children integrate into a supportive extended family when they come of age, mothers and administrators help to facilitate marriages for the young men and women of the village. The first marriage at the village took place in the late 1980’s when Asha of the Little Flower House held her wedding ceremony at the Vidya Ganapathy Temple.

Traditional Wedding Ceremony

The whole village joins in!

In the 15 years to follow, over thirty marriages have been conducted in the same spot. Marriages have led to several new births, and the SOS grandchildren add to the extended family network of the close-knit community. Just as a real daughter might, girls usually come back home to their mothers for care during late pregnancy and the birth of their children. Today, the Tambaram SOS has grown into a large and happy family with sons and daughters-in-law, grandsons, and granddaughters.

Youth House:

When village boys complete their 10th standard, they are sent to the Youth House, where an average of 10 boys at any time live under the supervision of a youth house in charge often referred to uncle.

This relocation gives the boys a necessary male role model while they come of age. Young men in the youth house have chosen to pursue a variety of avenues.

Retired Mothers:

After serving the Village with single-minded devotion for more than 20 years, several of the mothers have retired. It is heartening to note that most of the retired mothers have settled down within the family of their sons and daughters whom they cared for at the village.                                           << Back to Top>>
