Amudhavalli of the Krishna Krupa House is the senior-most mother in the village, having raised 27 children over the 26 years since the inception of SOS Chennai. A former hostel warden and teacher from Tuticonin near Madurai, Amuda read about the opportunity to join SOS as one of the first mothers in a Tamil paper, and thought it would be a perfect fit given her love of children. She has helped many children overcome adversity, including one child with muscular dystrophy, and is known around the village for her keen sense with babies. She has organized weddings for three of her daughters who have made her a proud granddaughter of six! Dhanabakiam of the Rama Priya House is also one of the village’s senior-most mothers. Over her 26 years at the village, she has raised 29 children, married 4 girls and 3 boys, and is the proud grandmother of nine! She is also proud of her children’s educational and professional successes, as one daughter has earned a diploma in electronics, another is pursuing teacher training at Balar Kalvi Nilayam, and a third is preparing to be a doctor. “One of the reasons I came here is because I wanted to be called Amma or mother. All of my children call me Ama and it brings me great happiness.”
Latha
of the Kama Koti House has been
raising a family of 11 children over her four years at the village
as a mother. Known for her impeccably neat household, the floors of
the Kama Koti House are filled with beautifully painted Kolam and
Rangooli with various geometrical designs and colors. Latha takes
great pride in helping the village observe various festivals and
special events, often making several different kinds of sweets that
her children distribute to other homes. She was honored to have
three of her daughters represent the household in a folk dance
performance on SOS Day celebrations of June 23, 2005. |
